first は古英語 fyrst に由来し、さらにゲルマン系の fore/for-「前に」が土台にある語。『前』に最上級の -st がついた形と考えると「いちばん前の」から「最初の」になった流れが見え、foremost や former にも同じ前方感覚が残る。
