順序・位置・時間などでいちばん先にあることを表す形容詞。『第一の』『最初の』の意味で、人や物の順位、章や段階の順番、初対面で受ける印象など、幅広い場面で基本的に使われる語。

first は古英語 fyrst に由来し、さらにゲルマン系の fore/for-「前に」が土台にある語。『前』に最上級の -st がついた形と考えると「いちばん前の」から「最初の」になった流れが見え、foremost や former にも同じ前方感覚が残る。
