chapter の語源・成り立ち Etymology
chapter は古フランス語 chapitre を経て、ラテン語 capitulum「小さな頭・見出し」に由来し、語根は caput「頭」。文章の内容を頭出しして区切る部分だったことから、本や報告書の「章」の意味になりました。関連語は capital、captain。
