chapter の語源・成り立ち Etymology
chapter は古フランス語 chapitre を経て、ラテン語 capitulum「小さな頭・見出し」に由来し、語根は caput「頭」。文章の内容を頭出しして区切る部分だったことから、今の「章」の意味になった。関連語は capital, captain。
Chapter came through Old French chapitre from Latin capitulum, which meant "little head" or "heading." It is related to Latin caput, meaning "head." Because a heading marked the start of a section, the word developed into the modern meaning of "chapter."
