A phase is one part or stage of a process, development, or period of time. It is used when something changes step by step, with each phase having its own features. The word can also describe a temporary period in someone’s life or behavior.

phase は「流れの中の一区切り」と捉えると覚えやすい語です。stage よりも、変化が進むプロセスの一場面という響きが強く、project phase, planning phase, final phase のように使われます。phases of the moon なら「月の満ち欠けの各段階」。なお phrase（語句）とつづり・発音が紛らわしいので、phase は「過程の段階」、phrase は「言葉のまとまり」と分けて固定すると混同しにくいです。
