planning は plan に -ing が付いた語で、plan はフランス語 plan、さらにラテン語 planum「平面」に由来します。物事を図面のように見渡して配置する感覚が、「計画する」につながりました。plain や plane も同根で、「平らで見通せる」が核です。
Planning comes from plan plus the suffix -ing. Plan came through French from Latin planum, meaning a flat surface, and it is related to plane and plain. The idea was first of a flat drawing or layout, then of arranging things clearly in advance.
