「Japan」は中国語の「日本（ジーパン）」がマレー語を経てポルトガル語に伝わった形。マルコ・ポーロが「Cipangu」と記したのが欧州での初出とされる。漢字「日本」は「日の出る本（もと）」の意味で、中国から見て東方に位置することに由来する。
Japan came into European languages from a form of Chinese "Riben" or "Cipan," passed through Malay and then Portuguese. Marco Polo wrote it as Cipangu, which helped spread an early form in Europe. The original Chinese characters 日本 mean "origin of the sun," referring to the land to the east, where the sun rises.
