adjective はラテン語 ad-「〜へ」+ iacere/ject「投げる」に由来し、adjectivum は「付け加えられる語」を意味しました。名詞に意味を投げ添えて性質を示す語だと考えると、形容詞の役割が見えます。inject や project も同じ ject を持つ同根語です。
