annals はラテン語 annales「年ごとの記録」が語源で、さらに annus「年」に由来します。もともと「一年一年を追って書いたもの」という発想なので「年代記」となり、annual や anniversary にも同じ ann-「年」が見えます。
Annals comes from Latin annales, meaning "yearly records," from annus "year." At first it referred to events written down year by year, and this developed into the sense of a historical record. It shares the same root as annual and anniversary.
