modifierはmodifyに-erが付いた語で、modifyはラテン語modus「尺度」+ facere「作る」から来た語だ。modeやmodificationも同根で、何かを壊して変えるのでなく「具合を調整して作り替える」感覚から、「修飾するもの」の意味が腑に落ちる。
Modifier comes from modify plus the suffix -er, meaning something that changes or adjusts.
