describe（記述する）に、行為者・手段を表す接尾辞 -or が付いた語。ラテン語 describere にさかのぼり、「書いて示す」が原義。description, descriptive などと同じ語族に属する。
Descriptor is built from describe plus the suffix -or, which often names a person or thing that does an action. Describe goes back to Latin describere, literally "to write down" or "set out in writing."
