ラテン語 describere（書き写す）の名詞形 descriptio から。接頭辞 de-（下に）＋ scribere（書く）で「詳しく書き記す」が原義。同根語に prescribe（処方する）、scripture（聖典）がある。言葉で「書き表す」ことが「説明」になった。
