definition は define の名詞形だと押さえるのが最短です。define が「意味をはっきり定める」で、-tion が「その行為・結果」を表すので、「定義・定義文」にそのままつながります。辞書や授業でよく出る the definition of A という形ごと覚えると定着しやすいです。explanation は広く説明すること、description は特徴を述べることですが、definition は「その語・概念が何を意味するかをきっちり区切って示す」語だと整理すると混同しにくくなります。

definitionはラテン語definire「境界を定める」が古フランス語を経て英語化し、de-「完全に」+ fin-「境界・終わり」+ -ition「行為」から成ります。つまり「意味の輪郭をきっちり区切ること」で、defineやfiniteも同じ発想です。
