ラテン語definire「境界を定める」に由来します。fin-は「境界・終わり」で、輪郭がはっきり区切られる発想から「明確さ」にもつながります。
Definition comes from the Latin word definire, which meant "to set boundaries" or "to limit." The part fin- is related to the idea of an end or boundary. From the idea of clear boundaries, the word also developed the sense of something being visually clear and well defined.
