net は古英語 net、さらにゲルマン祖語 *natja- にさかのぼる、ごく古い「網」の語である。network や netting にも同じ核が残り、糸を結んで作った“からめ取る道具”というイメージから意味が自然につながる。
Net is a very old English word, from Old English net, going back to Proto-Germanic *natja-. It originally meant a woven tool made to catch or hold things.
