覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
next は「順番を一つ先へ進める合図」として覚えると定着しやすい。手順説明なら first → then → next → finally の並びに入れると、ただの「それから」ではなく「次の段階へ」の感覚がつかめる。会話では What happened next?、予定では next week / next time が頻出。then は流れの継続、next は順序や時間で一つ先を指す、と比べると混同しにくい。なお next to は別表現で「〜の隣に」。

next は古英語 nehst に由来し、語幹 neah「近い」に最上級の -st が付いた語です。もともとは「いちばん近い」が原義なので、場所でも時間でも「次の」を表すのが腑に落ちます。near や nigh も同じ根です。
Next comes from Old English nehst, formed from neah, meaning "near," with the superlative ending -st. Its original meaning was "nearest," linking closeness with the following position in time or space.
