stadium はラテン語 stadium を経て、ギリシャ語 stadion「一定の長さ・競走路」にさかのぼります。もとは「その距離を走る場所」を指し、そこから観客席を備えた大きな競技場の意味になりました。関連語に stade, stadia があります。
From Latin stadium, going back to Greek stadion, which meant a fixed measure of length and also a racecourse. It first referred to the track for a race of that length. Later, it came to mean the larger sports place built around such a track, including the seats for spectators.
