mosquito はスペイン語 mosquito「小さなハエ」に由来し、mosca「ハエ」+ 指小辞 -ito に分けられ、さらにラテン語 musca にさかのぼります。muscid や musca も同根で、ただの虫名でなく「小さく飛び回るもの」という見方から「蚊」になったとわかります。
