Spanish は Spain に形容詞語尾 -ish が付いた語で、Spain は古フランス語 Espaigne を経てラテン語 Hispania にさかのぼります。つまり「スペインの」がそのまま「スペイン語」の名にもなった語で、関連語の Spain, Hispanic と並べると意味の筋道が見えます。
