coal（石炭）を知っていれば後半で「炭」だと見当がつく。char は char-grilled などで「焦がす・炭火で焼く」感じなので、charcoal は「焼いて炭になったもの」と押さえると残りやすい。charcoal grill なら木炭グリル、charcoal drawing なら木炭デッサン。coal が地中の石炭なのに対し、charcoal は木から人工的に作る炭、という違いまで一緒に覚えると混同しにくい。

charcoal は char＋coal の複合で、coal は古英語 col「炭」、char は「焼いて炭にする」の意です。carbon もラテン語 carbo「炭」を受け継ぐ近い語なので、「木を焼いて炭にしたもの」がそのまま木炭だと腑に落ちます。
