chalk は古英語 cealc を経て、ラテン語 calx「石灰岩・石灰」に由来する語で、もとは白い鉱物そのものを指しました。calcium や calcify と同根で、粉っぽい石灰質の石から、黒板に書く白い棒の意味が生まれた流れが見えてきます。
