Fertility is the ability to produce young, babies, or crops successfully. It is used both for people or animals and for land that can grow plants well. The exact meaning depends on whether the context is biology, medicine, or agriculture.
fertile(肥えた、実り多い)を知っていれば、-ity が付いて「その性質・状態」になり、fertility は「実る力・生み出す力」とつながる。土地なら fertile soil を思い出して「作物がよく育つ豊かさ」、人や動物なら fertility treatment, fertility rate で「妊娠・繁殖しやすさ」。birth rate が実際の出生数寄りなのに対し、fertility は“産める・育つポテンシャル”に重心がある、と整理すると覚えやすい。
Start from `fertile`, then add `-ity`, which often turns an adjective into a quality or state. That gives you the idea of the power to produce, grow, or create life. It is useful to connect both sides: `fertile soil` for land and `fertility rate` for people or animals.
The fertility of the soil makes this region ideal for farming.
土壌の肥沃さのおかげで、この地域は農業に適している。
The fertility treatment helped the couple conceive a child.
その不妊治療によって、その夫婦は子どもを授かることができた。
The valley's fertility made it a desirable place to settle.
Fertility comes from fertile plus the noun ending -ity. Fertile comes from Latin fertilis and is linked to the idea of bearing or producing abundantly, related to the Latin root ferre, "to carry" or "bring." From that sense of producing well, fertility came to mean the power to generate growth, crops, or offspring.
