解説 Definition
「apron」は、衣服を汚れや損傷から保護するために腰の周りに結んで前に垂らして着用する布製のエプロンを指します。料理や工作など、汚れる可能性のある作業をする際に着用されます。劇場の舞台前部分や空港の駐機場を指す専門用語としても使われます。

apron は古フランス語 naperon「小さな布」が英語で a napron と言われ、切れ目がずれて an apron になった語です。napkin と同じ語根を持ち、「前に掛ける布」がそのままエプロンになった経緯が見えます。
