napkin は中英語 napkin に由来し、古フランス語 nape「布」に縮小辞 -kin が付いて「小さな布」を表しました。nape はさらにラテン語 mappa「布・ナプキン」にさかのぼり、map も同根なので、もともと「広げる布」の感覚をもつ語です。
Napkin comes from Middle English and Old French, where nape meant a cloth, with the small-object ending -kin added to it. It goes back further to Latin mappa, meaning cloth or napkin, which is also related to map. The original sense was simply "a small cloth," and later it became the usual word for a table or cleaning cloth.
