hand が見えるので、まず「手で持って使う小さな布」と固定すると覚えやすい語です。意味は tissue（使い捨ての紙）でも towel（大きめの布）でもなく、ポケットに入れて持ち歩く布の handkerchief。つづりは hand + kerchief ですが、発音では d があまり強く出ず「hankerchief」に近く聞こえるので、音とつづりのずれに注意。最後は chief と同じ並びで -chief、-cheif にしないのがコツです。

handkerchief は hand「手」+ kerchief の複合語です。kerchief は古フランス語 couvrechief「頭を覆う布」に由来し、cover 系の couvrir と chief「頭」から成ります。もとは頭布の語を手持ち布に転じたと見ると、意味変化が腑に落ちます。
Handkerchief combines hand with kerchief. Kerchief came from Old French couvrechief, literally "cover the head," from words related to cover and chief in its older sense of "head." The cloth was first something worn on the head, but later the word shifted to a cloth carried in the hand. That is why hand was added to make the newer meaning clear.
