nape は中英語 nape にさかのぼりますが、起源ははっきりしません。有力説では古フランス語 hanap「杯」と結びつき、同系とされる hanap や hanaper のように、頭の付け根のくぼみを器に見立てた語だと考えると腑に落ちます。
Nape has been in English since Middle English, but its deeper origin is uncertain. Some scholars connect it with Old French words such as hanap, meaning a cup or bowl, perhaps by comparison with the hollow shape at the back of the neck. Even so, the history is not fully settled, and the word remains etymologically unclear.
