diaper の語源・成り立ち Etymology
diaper は古フランス語 diapre から入り、さらに中世ギリシャ語 diaspros「真っ白な」に由来するとされます。dia-「すっかり」+ aspros「白い」で、もとは白地の織り模様の布を指し、そこから乳児に当てる布、つまりおむつの意味へ移りました。関連する dia- は diameter、diagnosis にも見られます。
Diaper came into English through Old French diapre, probably from Medieval Greek diaspros, meaning very white or bright white. It first referred to a rich white cloth with a repeated woven pattern. Because that kind of cloth was later used for babies, the word gradually shifted to mean the cloth itself and then the baby garment. The first meaning was about the fabric, not childcare.
