ギリシャ語 diagnōsis（dia-「通して」+ gnōsis「知ること」）が語源。症状を「見通して」本質を知る行為が診断。gnōsis は「知」を意味し、同根語に prognosis（前もって知る→予後）、agnostic（知らない→不可知論者）がある。
