ラテン語 assidere（そばに座る）から派生した中世ラテン語 assessare（価値を定める）が起源。as-（～のそばに）+ sedere（座る）で、裁判官の隣に座って価値を査定する人が原義。関連語: assess（評価する）、session（座ること→会議）。「隣に座って見極める」から評価・査定の意味になった。
"Assessment" comes from "assess," which goes back to Medieval Latin "assessare," based on Latin "assidere," meaning "to sit beside." The image was of someone sitting next to a judge or official to help decide value or tax. From this idea of judging something closely, the word developed the meaning of evaluation.
