An appraisal is a judgment about the value, quality, or importance of something. It is often used in business, finance, and work situations, such as checking the value of a house or reviewing an employee's performance. The word is more formal than simple words like evaluation.

appraisal は appraise の名詞形と押さえると整理しやすい。まず praise が「ほめる」なので、appraise は単なる称賛ではなく、対象を見て価値や出来を見積もる語だと覚える。assessment や evaluation に近いが、appraisal は人事評価・資産査定のように、基準に沿ってきちんと判断する場面で出やすい。performance appraisal、property appraisal が頻出。approval「承認」と取り違えないこと。
