home は古英語 hām に由来し、ゲルマン祖語では「村・居場所・帰るべき所」を含む語でした。接辞でできた語ではなく核そのものが「落ち着く場所」で、homely や homeless を見ると、単なる家屋でなく「身を置く場」だから home なのだと腑に落ちます。
