domicile はフランス語経由のラテン語 domicilium に由来し、domus「家」と colere「住む」が重なった語です。domestic や colony も縁語で、「人が正式に住み着く家の場所」という核から住所・居所の意味になりました。
Domicile came through French from Latin domicilium, a word connected with domus meaning "house" and living or dwelling there. It is related in sense to domestic, and more distantly to colony through another Latin root about settling. The word developed from the idea of a settled home to a formal place of residence.
