A source is the person, place, or thing that something comes from. It is often used for information, energy, water, problems, or ideas. In speaking and writing, it can also mean the origin of news or facts.

source は古フランス語 source「泉・源泉」から来て、さらにラテン語 surgere「湧き上がる・立ち上がる」に行き着きます。sourc- の奥にある surg- は surge と同根で、「どこから何かが湧き出す場所」が今の「情報源」の感覚につながります。
"Source" came into English through Old French source, meaning "spring" or "fountain." It goes back to Latin surgere, meaning "to rise" or "to spring up," which is also related to English "surge." The idea moved from a place where water rises up to any place something begins or comes from.
