appraising は古フランス語を経て、後期ラテン語 appretiare「値段をつける」に由来し、ad-「…へ」+ pretium「価格」に分けられます。appreciate や precious も同根で、「鑑定する」が本来は「ものに正しい値を与えること」だと見えてきます。
