Appraise means to judge the value, quality, or condition of something carefully. It is often used when an expert estimates the price of property, art, or other valuable items.

assess や evaluate と近いですが、appraise は特に「専門家が価値を見極める」ときの語だと覚えると残りやすいです。appraise a house / painting / property, appraise the damage のように、金額・品質・損害を見積もる場面でよく使います。名詞 appraisal（査定）とセットで覚えると定着しやすいです。見た目が praise に似ていますが、praise は「褒める」。appraise は感想ではなく、根拠をもって査定・評価する語です。

appraise は古フランス語 aprisier「値をつける」からで、ad-「〜へ」＋ price につながる語幹にさかのぼります。price や prize も同根で、ただ眺めるのでなく「適正な値を定める」と考えると、鑑定する意味がきれいにつながります。
Appraise came from Old French aprisier, meaning "to set a price on," and it is related to price and prize. The word originally had the idea of fixing a value. From there, it developed into the wider sense of judging or assessing something carefully.
