size up は size「大きさを見積もる」と up「すっかり」から成る句動詞で、size は古フランス語 assise、さらにラテン語 assidere にさかのぼります。assize や resize と同根で、「大きさを最後まで見切る」感覚から、相手を品定めする意味になりました。
