古フランス語 assise「定められたもの、法令」を経て、ラテン語 assidere「そばに座る、席に着く」にさかのぼる。権威者が席について正式に取り決めるという発想から、公的な規則や基準を表すようになった。
Assize entered English through Old French assise, associated with the verb meaning “to seat,” and ultimately goes back to Latin assidere, “to sit beside.” The idea of something formally settled led to the sense of an official rule or standard.
