assize は古フランス語 assise に由来し、さらにラテン語 assidere「そばに座って定める」にさかのぼります。ad-「〜へ」+ sedere「座る」が核で、assess や size と同根なので、「座って基準を決めること」から定価や規格を公的に定める意味になったと分かります。
Assize comes from Old French assise and goes back to Latin assidere, meaning "to sit beside" or "sit in judgment." It is built from ad- and sedere, "to sit." The word first had the sense of something formally settled or fixed by authorities sitting together, and from that it came to mean an official rule, standard, or court session. It is related to assess and size.
