try は中英語期に古フランス語 trier（選別する、調べる、試す）から入った語です。さらにラテン語に結び付ける説もありますが、詳しい起源は確定していません。tried は、語末の子音字＋yを i に変えて -ed を付けた形です。
Try entered English from Old French trier, meaning to sort, select, examine, or test. The French word has often been connected with a Late Latin form related to tritare, “to rub” or “wear down,” although the deeper development is not entirely certain. The sense moved from examining or testing something to making an attempt. Tried follows the spelling rule that changes final consonant-plus-y to -ied.
