中英語 gesse を経て、古ノルド語 geta「得る・思い当てる」に近い北欧系の語に由来するとされます。答えを頭の中でさっと「つかむ」感覚が、現在の「推測する」につながっています。
Guess came through Middle English gesse and is probably related to Old Norse geta, meaning “to get” or “to think of.” The idea developed toward “catching” an answer in your mind before you know it for sure.
