古英語 Wodnesdæg 由来で、Wednes- は主神 Woden、-day は「日」です。同根語に Odin があり、ローマの Mercury の日をゲルマン神に置き換えた名残だと分かると、水曜が神話の翻訳語だったことが見えてきます。
Wednesday comes from Old English `Wodnesdæg`, meaning "Woden's day." Woden was the Germanic god later linked with Odin, and his name replaced the Roman god Mercury in the weekday system. The modern spelling changed over time, but the old god's name is still inside it.
