recent はまず already知っている receive・recipe などの rec- と切り離して、「recently（最近）」の形でセットで覚えると定着しやすい語です。意味は「今にかなり近い過去」で、recent news, recent changes, in recent years のように、出来事・変化・時期と結びつきやすいのが特徴。latest が「最新の1つ」を強調しやすいのに対し、recent は「ここしばらくの新しいものごと」という幅を持って使う、と整理すると混同しにくいです。
