written は古英語 writan（刻む・ひっかく）にさかのぼり、もとは紙に「印を刻む」感覚の語です。語幹 writ- に過去分詞語尾 -en が付いた形で、write や writ も同根。文字を書くことが、もともと表面に傷をつけて印す行為だったと分かります。
