epistolary はラテン語 epistolaris「手紙の」に由来し、さらにギリシャ語 epistolē「書簡」へさかのぼります。epistolē は epi「〜へ」+ stellein「送る」から成り、epistle も同語根なので、「送られた文」から「書簡体の」という意味が自然に見えてきます。
