assumption の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語 assumere（ad-「～へ」＋ sumere「取る」）の過去分詞 assumptus から。consume（消費する）やresume（再開する）も同じ sumere 系。「自分の方へ取り込む→当然のこととして受け取る→仮定する」と意味が発展した。
Assumption comes from Latin assumere, meaning "to take to oneself," from ad- "to" and sumere "to take." The basic idea was taking something up or accepting it. From there, the meaning shifted to accepting something as true in your mind, even without proof. The same Latin root appears in words like consume and resume.
