An assumption is something you accept as true without complete proof. It is often used when people form opinions, make plans, or begin an argument. Assumptions can be reasonable, but they may also be wrong.

assume（〜だと思い込む・当然とみなす）が分かれば、その名詞形が assumption。核は「証明なしにそう置く」という感覚で、仮定・思い込み・前提が一本でつながる。数学や議論では「出発点として置く仮定」、日常では「相手が勝手に決めつける思い込み」の両方で使う。make assumptions は「決めつけをする」、on the assumption that ... は「〜という前提で」。fact のような確定情報ではなく、確認前の置き石だと意識すると覚えやすい。premise より未確認感が強く、hypothesis ほど研究っぽくない。

ラテン語 assumere（ad-「～へ」＋ sumere「取る」）の過去分詞 assumptus から。consume（消費する）やresume（再開する）も同じ sumere 系。「自分の方へ取り込む→当然のこととして受け取る→仮定する」と意味が発展した。
Assumption comes from Latin assumere, meaning "to take to oneself," from ad- "to" and sumere "to take." The basic idea was taking something up or accepting it. From there, the meaning shifted to accepting something as true in your mind, even without proof. The same Latin root appears in words like consume and resume.
