consumeはラテン語consumereに由来し、con-「完全に」+sumere「取る」が合わさって「すっかり使い取る」が原義です。だから食べ尽くすも資源を消費するも同じ線上にあり、何かを残さず減らす感覚が核だと分かります。assumeやresumeもsumereを受け継ぐ仲間です。
Consume comes from Latin consumere, made from con- and sumere, meaning "to take completely." Its original sense was to use something up fully or exhaust it. That is how it came to cover both eating and using resources until little or nothing remains. Assume and resume also go back to the same Latin verb sumere.
