spend は古英語を経て中世ラテン語 spendere に由来し、さらに ex-「外へ」+ pendere「量る・支払う」と結びつきます。expend や dispense も同根で、お金や時間を spend するのは“外へ量り出す”感覚です。
Spend came through Old English and is connected with Medieval Latin spendere. It is also related to the idea of ex- meaning "out" and pendere meaning "to weigh" or "to pay," so the word developed the sense of giving out money, time, or resources.
