send は古英語 sendan、さらにゲルマン祖語 *sandijaną に由来し、核は「行かせる」。明確な接頭辞はなく、遠く sense と同じ印欧祖語 *sent- にさかのぼるともされ、sender や sent にも「相手へ旅立たせる」感覚が残る。
Send comes from Old English sendan, from Proto-Germanic *sandijaną, with the basic sense "cause to go." It does not clearly contain a separate prefix or suffix in modern English. Over time, it kept the idea of making a person or thing go to someone else, seen also in sender and sent.
