「伝言」とは、直接会って話すのではなく、第三者や通信手段を介して相手に伝える言葉や情報のことです。口頭や書面、電子的手段（メール、テキストなど）で伝えられる内容を指します。ビジネスや日常生活の中で、不在の相手に情報を届ける際によく使われる表現です。

message は古フランス語 message を経て、ラテン語 missus「送られたもの」にさかのぼる。語根 miss- は「送る」で、mission や dismiss と同族だから、メッセージは本来「誰かに送り出されたもの」だ。
"Message" comes from Old French message and goes back to Latin missus, meaning "something sent." It is part of the same word family as "mission" and "dismiss," all from a root meaning "to send." So a message was originally something sent from one person to another, and later became any communicated information.
