unspentはun-「まだ…ない」+ spent から成る語です。spendは古英語を経てラテン語expendere「量って支払う」にさかのぼるため、まだ量り出されず使われていないという原義が「未使用の」に直結します。関連語はspend, expend。
Unspent is made from un- "not yet" and spent. Spend goes back through Old English and Old French to Latin expendere, which originally meant "to weigh out" and then "to pay out." The idea moved from measuring out money to using up resources in general, so unspent means not yet used up. A related word is expend.
