勝ちはしたものの、そのために払った犠牲や損失があまりに大きく、実質的には得をしたと言えない状態を表す形容詞。『ピュロスの勝利』に由来し、見かけ上の成功が敗北に近い場合に使う。
Pyrrhic describes a victory or success that costs so much that it almost feels like a defeat. It is often used in formal writing or discussion when the damage, loss, or effort is too great compared with the result.

pyrrhic は、ギリシャ語 Pyrrhos「赤毛の人」由来の固有名詞 Pyrrhus から来た語です。『ピュロス王の勝利』が損害の大きさで有名になり、『勝ったのに痛すぎる』という逆説がそのまま意味になりました。pyro や pyre も同じギリシャ語 pyr「火」にさかのぼります。
