pre- は「前もって」、suppose は「〜だと仮定する」。この2つが見えれば、presupposition は「先に仮定してあること」と取りやすい。assumption と近いが、presupposition は発言・議論・質問の背後で、本人も当然視している前提、という響きが強い。つまり表の結論より一段下の土台。question a presupposition, hidden presupposition などの形で覚えると使い所が見えやすい。proposition や position と見間違えやすい点にも注意。

presupposition は pre-「前もって」+ supposition「仮に置くこと」から成り、後者はラテン語 supponere（下に置く、前提として置く）に由来します。suppose や position と同根で、「先に置いておく考え」から「前提」の意味になりました。
