A supposition is an idea or belief that is accepted as possible without complete proof. It is a more formal word for an assumption, often used in reasoning, discussion, or writing.

suppose「〜だと思う・仮定する」を知っていれば、その名詞形が supposition と押さえると覚えやすい語です。まず頭の中で前提を置くが、まだ証拠は弱い、という感触が核心。assumption よりやや改まって論理的、fact とは反対側にある語として整理すると残りやすいです。on the supposition that ...（〜という仮定のもとで）という形も頻出。確定ではなく、議論の土台として置く一時的な想定だと意識すると定着します。

suppositionは中世ラテン語suppositioに由来し、ラテン語sub-「下に」+ ponere「置く」が語源です。文字どおりは「下に置くこと」で、議論の土台としてひとまず前提を置く感覚から「仮定、推測」になったと分かります。関連語はsuppose、position。
Supposition comes from Medieval Latin suppositio, from Latin sub- "under" and ponere "to put." Literally, it meant "a putting under" or "placing beneath." From the idea of laying something down as a base for thought or argument, it developed the sense of an assumption or guess; compare suppose and position.
