量子力学において、複数の状態が同時に存在する現象。または物理的に異なるものが一つに重なり合う状態のこと。
Superposition means the state of one thing being placed over another. It is used in general English for layers, and in science it can describe effects or states that combine when they exist together.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず position「位置」が見えると覚えやすい語。super- は here では「すごい」より「上に重ねる」感覚で取り、複数の position が同じ場所に載っている図を思い浮かべると定着しやすい。physics では、まだ一つに決まっていない複数の状態が同時に成り立つ場面で使うので、quantum superposition をセットで覚えると強い。superimpose は「上から重ねる動作」、superposition は「重なっている状態」。supposition「仮定」とつづりが少し似るので混同に注意。

superposition はラテン語 super-「上に」+ position「置くこと」で、核の posit は ponere「置く」にさかのぼります。position や compose と同根で、「上へ上へと置く」と考えると、重ね合わせや重畳の意味がそのまま見えてきます。
Superposition comes from Latin super- "over, above" and position, from ponere, meaning "to place." The original idea is of placing one thing on top of another. From that physical sense, it developed into wider uses such as layering or overlapping, especially in science and mathematics.
